I hung out with a professional wrestler tonight… We grew up together, now he gets his ass kicked and kicks ass for a living. He is also almost 7 feet tall now and kicked my ass when we were in grade school. Good times.

here’s how to solve the “gif” versus “jif” problem:

If gif stands for Graphical Interchange Format, and Graphical has a hard “g,” then what in the fuck argument is there for pronouncing it “jif?”

I recently had this same discussion with a buddy of mine.  

Pronunciation

The creators of the format pronounced GIF with a soft “G“ /ˈdʒɪf/ as in “gin”. An alternative pronunciation uses a hard “G” /ˈɡɪf/ as in “graphics”, reflecting the expanded acronym. Both pronunciations are given as correct by the Oxford English Dictionary[5] and the American Heritage Dictionary.[6]

According to Steve Wilhite, the creator of the GIF format, the original pronunciation deliberately echoes the American peanut butter brand, Jif, and the employees of CompuServe would often say “Choosy developers choose GIF”, spoofing this brand’s television commercials.[7] This pronunciation was also identified by CompuServe in their documentation of a graphics display program called CompuShow.[7] 

That’s from the wikipedia.  According to some other sites it was on the CompuServe FAQ page but I have yet to find that.

This looks very similar to the house/hut my dad and his family grew up in during the summer months in Sicily. It was on a farm that had a lot of olive trees and other nice things. It was only one room that a family of 6 had to share.
